Why is My Baby Having Split Nights?

Split nights – those dreaded long middle-of-the-night awakenings – can be a challenge for parents.

While it can be incredibly frustrating, understanding the potential causes can help you address the issue effectively. As a certified gentle sleep coach, I often see these recurring patterns:

Developmental Leaps

Your baby's brain is constantly developing, and these leaps can disrupt sleep. When a baby is mastering a new skill, like rolling over, sitting up, or crawling, their brain is working overtime, often leading to increased wakefulness at night. This is a normal phase and usually passes as your baby consolidates their new skills.

Overtiredness or Undertiredness

Believe it or not, both overtiredness and undertiredness can contribute to split nights. An overtired baby may struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep. Conversely, an undertired baby might wake up early and find it difficult to resettle. Following an age-appropriate sleep schedule is key.

Daytime Sleep

Daytime sleep plays a crucial role in nighttime sleep quality. If your baby is napping too much or too little, it can disrupt their sleep-wake cycle. A good rule of thumb is to ensure your baby is getting enough (age-appropriate) daytime sleep, but not so much that it interferes with nighttime sleep.

Bedtime Routine and Environment

A consistent bedtime routine signals to your baby that it's time to wind down. A calm and dark sleep environment also promotes better sleep. If your baby's routine is inconsistent or their sleep space is too stimulating, it can contribute to night wakings.

Feeding and Nutrition

For babies, growth spurts can sometimes increase nighttime feedings. However, if your baby is consistently waking for feeds at night and is not eating well during the day and/or isn't gaining weight appropriately, it's essential to consult with your pediatrician and lactation support, if applicable.

Health Issues

Sometimes, underlying health issues can cause sleep disturbances. Common culprits include teething, ear infections, reflux, allergies, or other medical conditions. If you suspect a health issue, consult your pediatrician.

Parent Behavior

While it's natural to want to comfort your baby when they wake up, it's important to be mindful of your responses. If you consistently rush to your baby's crib at the first sign of a stir, they may learn to rely on you to fall back asleep.

Remember: Every baby is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. It's essential to observe your baby's patterns, identify potential causes, and implement sleep strategies. Patience and consistency are key to helping your baby sleep through the night.
